On his first full day at home, Jake began exploring the dining room and got comfortable under the dining room table. We tried luring him down the hall toward the rest of the house, by sitting far away and lobbing kibble toward him. He turned it into a game, where he would venture out just far enough to get the kibble and then retreat. Small steps, no need to push things.
We tried carrying Jake downstairs and taking him outside so he could relieve himself. However, just picking him up sent his heart racing, and by the time he got outside he was totally shell-shocked, wouldn’t even eat a treat. We hung out outside for a while, waiting for him to acclimate, but after several minutes he was still on edge, so we brought him back inside. For now, he’ll have to do his business indoors but he does love perching himself in the window and smelling the outdoors from there.
We set up an inflatable mattress in the living room so that we could take turns sleeping in the same room as Jake until he was comfortable coming into our room.
